VFA-101, also known as the "Grim Reapers," was a U.S. Navy strike fighter squadron reestablished in 2012 -2019 to serve as the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) for the F-35C Lightning II, the Navy’s first carrier-capable stealth fighter. Although the squadron's history dates back to 1952, its modern incarnation focused on training pilots and maintainers for the F-35C, ensuring the successful integration of this advanced aircraft into the fleet.
Stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, VFA-101 played a pivotal role in the early development and operational testing of the F-35C, preparing the Navy for the future of carrier aviation. The "Grim Reapers" emblem, featuring a scythe-wielding reaper, reflects the squadron's lethal precision and combat readiness. Despite its significant contributions, VFA-101 was deactivated in 2019 as part of the Navy’s reorganization of its F-35C training efforts, with the training responsibilities transferred to other units. The "Grim Reapers" legacy continues to symbolize the cutting-edge capabilities of modern naval aviation.
